About the Programme

The Brazil Energy Programme (BEP) was a project funded by the United Kingdom with the aim of accelerating Brazil's energy transition to renewable energy sources. To achieve this, it combined British expertise and Brazilian potential in conducting studies in various areas: offshore wind, solar energy, biofuels, hydrogen, and waste-to-energy, focusing on regulatory, market, and technological innovations.

Instituto 17 led the BEP's waste-to-energy initiative, producing a range of technical studies that contributed to the Brazilian biogas sector. Topics addressed included the potential supply, decarbonization, and investment opportunities for biogas in Brazil, the development of recommendations for the sector, and the creation of a regulatory guide for the distribution of biomethane.
