Who we are
Instituto 17 (i17) is a non-profit civil society organization founded in 2018. In just a few years, i17 has become a national and international reference in just energy transition, circular economy, and sustainable public policy. Our mission is to turn the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into real, measurable change.
Mission
To promote the SDGs by building sustainable solutions that uphold collective rights, value cultural and environmental diversity, and place social inclusion at the core of ecological transformation.
Vision
To be globally recognized for connecting science, public policy, and social innovation to address climate change — with justice, equity, and regeneration at the heart of everything we do.
Work and Impact
Although young, i17 has quickly achieved significant milestones. We led the development of the Biomethane Regulatory Guide, in partnership with the Brazilian Association of Regulatory Agencies (ABAR) and with support from the UK government, helping states adopt this strategic clean energy source. We also helped improve the RenovaCalc platform with Embrapa Meio Ambiente, enabling biomethane integration into Brazil's RenovaBio policy. Together with Embrapa Swine and Poultry, we developed the ABC+Calc, a scientific tool for assessing low-carbon agricultural practices in support of Brazil's ABC+ Plan.
At the international level, our Executive Director and Founder, Alessandro Sanches Pereira, contributed as an author to the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), writing on social impacts and demand-side mitigation strategies — one of the most important and forward-looking areas of global climate action.
We also carry out research and policy work with institutions like the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), UN-Habitat, and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). Our collaboration network includes organizations such as GIZ, Diaconia, and the Global South Nexus, as well as leading academic institutions including the University of São Paulo (USP), University of Campinas (Unicamp), São Paulo State University (UNESP), Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and Embrapa.
Our projects are further strengthened by partnerships with Brazilian federal agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), and the Energy Research Company (EPE). These connections bridge science, civil society, and public policymaking.
Inclusion Initiatives
Transformation must include everyone. That's why we support initiatives that expand opportunities and democratize access to sustainability. The Women in Biogas network, founded and incubated by i17, connects over 450 women across Brazil, advancing technical education, leadership, and visibility in the renewable energy sector. The Enedina Alves Marques Fellowship supports young researchers from vulnerable backgrounds who are working in sustainability and climate justice, promoting diversity and equity in science.
Why support i17?
In a short time, i17 has proven its unique ability to link science, policy, and social impact. We work with technical precision, strategic vision, and a firm commitment to a just and regenerative future. Every project we deliver is rooted in collaboration, active listening, and applied innovation. Supporting i17 means investing in smart, ethical, and courageous solutions to today’s climate and sustainability challenges.
Strategic Partners and Funders
i17 believes in the power of connections to generate even better results. That's why we've built a solid network of strategic partnerships with companies and professionals who share our values and vision for the future.
